Write Your Character Piece! with Jon Bander

Saturday, October 27, 2018 | 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm

This workshop will help students create character pieces for variety and/or full-length shows for festivals like the Edinburgh Fringe.  We’ll focus not only on the game side of a character, but also on creating a believable, even lovable person through which to tell these awesome jokes.  Students will bring in pre-written characters (or at least pitches) that will be fleshed out through in-class analysis and improv exercises focused on grounding, realism, and justification through emotion and point-of-view.  Students will also view and discuss sketch/character examples and identify the grounding that makes them successful.  If you want to build hilarious, realistic characters and start touring them, this is the class for you.
Jon Bander is an actor and comedian living in New York. He is a  Character 101 teacher and member of house team Characters Welcome at UCBT. He also taught and performs musical improv with Premiere: The Improvised Musical and Warm Blooded at the Magnet Theater. Otherwise, he does character bits and standup at various NYC theaters, bars and basements.
Jon was selected to perform in the New Faces: Characters showcase at the Just For Laughs festival in Montreal. He has also worked for The Second City Theatricals aboard the Norwegian Dawn cruise ship. Jon has also performed and taught workshops at festivals and cities across the country. He’s been fortunate to study with improv luminaries like TJ Jagodowski, David Pasquesi, Armando Diaz, Mick Napier and Susan Messing to name a few.
Outside of improv, Jon has appeared on TBS’s “Search Party” and the Netflix shows “Master Of None”, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “The Characters”. He also performed off-off Broadway in ‘PharmaBro: An American Douchical”, “8 Million Protagonists”, “POPE! An Epic Musical” and NY Fringe Festival hit musical “Nightfall On Miranga Island”.
Most people just call him Bander. Feel free to do the same.
